When the recession taught jewelers one thing, it absolutely was that they must wean themselves off of the practice of over-stocking inventory that doesn't move. M. Geller, which launched version one of its Bridal Ring Builder in 2004, is now around the third version, says Louis Price, chief operating officer. Upgrades for the program include changes towards the layout and colors, and simplified search functions, all with the purpose of making this system as user-friendly as possible.



"We all consider the competitive ball field," Price says in explaining why the time had come for Bridal Ring Builder, part III. "We all consider the technology evolving within the competitive marketplace."



2. Fake it 'til you make it



It's really a stand-off: Retailers are not wanting to plunk down cash to fill their display cases with diamond engagement rings that are not sure sellers, and vendors have trouble securing the credit that allows these phones supply entire showrooms on memo.



One solution comes via the growing number of suppliers offering "brass-and-glass" inventory

programs that enable retailers to buy engagement ring replicas metallic alloy and cubic zirconia in a fraction from the cost of rings made from diamonds and platinum. If your initial reaction is "not within my store," you're not alone.



"We use a large amount of customers that when we introduced it, said 'This isn't for me personally, I only sell genuine,'" Gabriel and Co.'s Dominick Gabriel says of his company's Bridal Sample Program, launched in January 2008. Yet those self same jewelers reconsidered after they saw how good the systems were employed by other retailers, he admits that.



Gabriel and Co. offers eight different assortments of their best-selling mountings, and also gives jewelers the possibility to handpick their particular mixes.



Bridal consumers do not complain concerning the look with the replicas--nor can they appear to mind waiting for that accompany ordering either, as the majority of bridal is custom ordered anyway, Gabriel says.



One word of recommendation Gabriel proposes to retailers who carry the samples: carry about Ten to twenty real sets of popular engagement ring styles.

3. Seize the celebrity endorsement



Colored diamonds happen to be red-carpet regulars within the last couple of years, but lately, diamonds with hue have been heading into happily-ever-after territory due to big-screen veterans and chart-topping songbirds alike.



Jennifer Lopez famously kicked off the trend in 2002, when actor Ben Affleck presented

her using a pink diamond solitaire, says Robert May, executive director with the Natural Color Diamond Association (NCDIA). The engagement may have gone belly-up, but the allure of colored diamonds was occur stone-and in photos.



This coming year, it thrives on again, with a handful of celebrity brides-to-be-flashing colored diamond rings.



Leading the list over the last couple of months is country crooner Carrie Underwood, that has been flashing a Johnathon Arndt-designed yellow band. Then there is Heroes star Kristen Bell, who's been revealing her 3-carat, natural fancy-colored brown wedding ring produced by Neil Lane. Finally, there's supermodel Naomi Campbell, reportedly sporting a Van Cleef and Arpels black diamond ring.

While May says many retailers still don't carry colored diamonds, offering a minimum of a small selection could tempt those customers who would like the ring which they won't see everywhere, nearly everywhere.
